Air Make-Up Unit (AMU) Periodic Care

An Air Make-Up Unit (AMU) is essential for maintaining proper booth pressurization, supplying tempered air, and managing cure cycles. Because these units handle massive volumes of air and utilize direct-fired gas burners, maintenance is split into two strict operational tiers to ensure mechanical reliability and structural safety.

Tier 1: Monthly AMU Inspections

Perform these mechanical checks every 30 days to protect the blower assembly from premature failure and ensure stable airflow.

1. Isolation & Safety

Before opening any access panels, perform a complete Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) at the main electrical disconnect. Ensure the gas supply line to the AMU is shut off and the unit has cooled down completely if it was recently running a bake cycle.

2. Blower Bearings Evaluation

  • Inspect for Radial and Axial Movement: Grasp the blower wheel shaft and check for mechanical play. There should be no noticeable slop or clunking within the bearing pillow blocks.

  • Check for Noise and Friction: Manually rotate the blower wheel by hand. It should spin freely without grinding, squeaking, or rubbing against the housing.

  • Lubrication: If the bearings feature grease fittings, inject a high-temperature, lithium-based grease according to the manufacturer’s specification. Wipe away any purged grease to prevent dust accumulation.

3. Belt & Drive Line Inspection

  • Check Tension and Wear: Evaluate the blower motor drive belts. Look for glazing, fraying, cracks, or sagging. Ensure the belt deflection matches proper operational tolerances.

  • Pulley Alignment: Verify that the motor pulley and blower shaft pulley sit parallel to prevent premature belt snapping or heavy system vibration.

4. Housing & Pre-Filter Cleanliness

  • Decontaminate the Housing: Vacuum out any loose dust, leaves, or outdoor debris that bypassed the external intake hoods.

  • Inspect Pre-Filters: Check the AMU pre-filters. Replace them immediately if they are heavily loaded with environmental dust, bugs, or moisture to prevent choking the main intake plenum.

Tier 2: Annual AMU Burner Servicing

The direct-fired gas burner requires a deep technical service once a year to ensure clean combustion, prevent safety faults, and eliminate hazardous gas leaks.

1. Flame Sensor & Igniter Cleaning

  • Remove Accumulation: Carefully pull the flame rod/sensor and spark igniter from the burner assembly.

  • Polish the Sensor: Use a fine emery cloth or non-metallic scouring pad to gently clean away white silica deposits, carbon buildup, and oxidation from the probe. Clean sensors prevent the AMU flame safety control from dropping out or throwing nuisance ignition faults.

2. Wire-Brushing Burner Ports

  • Inspect the Burner Profile: Over months of heavy operation, air particulates can clog the tiny gas ports along the burner cast-iron sections.

  • Clear the Ports: Use a stiff wire brush to vigorously clean the face of the burner, clearing out any soot or debris blocking the holes. Ensure the burner profile plates are unwarped and clear of obstructions to maintain an even, stable flame pattern across the entire plenum airway.

3. Gas Train Leak Testing

  • Pressure Verification: Inspect all gas pipe joints, pilot lines, main safety shut-off valves, and regulator connections along the AMU gas train.

  • Bubble or Electronic Test: With the gas line pressurized, apply a non-corrosive leak-detection solution to every joint or utilize a calibrated electronic combustible gas detector to verify there is zero gas bypass or leakage.

  • Verify Safety Interlocks: Test the high and low gas pressure switches to guarantee they will automatically shut down the gas train if the line pressure spikes or drops outside safe operating parameters.
